Space Travel Problem Statement:
In 2050 the Earth’s resources are becoming inefficient to support human life. Experts calculate that by 2070 the earth will be uninhabitable.
Background
In 2048 the Mars expedition of that began in 2044 failed to generate an atmosphere that is suitable for human life pervasively. However, there is a colony on Mars but it is limited and can only support life temporarily for up to 100 people.
Concurrently the Jupiter’s moon expedition failed as well in 2049.
The closet planet is Proxima B: 4.2 Light Years away
What We Need to Assess
- Which planets will be our primary and two contingent targets?
- What type of space vessel should be use?
- What type of protective mechanisms we should use?
- What should be the skillsets on board
- What type of engine should we use
Objective 1
Safely travel to habitable planet and maintain the ability to return to Earth within 4.5 years
Key Results
- Arrive at habitable planet within 2 year
- Transport vessel obtains no debilitating damage
- Colony establishment is complete within 2.5 months
- Return trip to Earth is ready to start 2.25 years before return date
- Return to Earth less than 4.5 years after the start of the expedition (if needed)
Objective 2
Establish self-sustaining and defensible colony of 2,000 men and women upon arrival
Key Results
- Ensure defensible and expandable perimeter
- Obtain tactical conflict advantage of all threats
- Activate colony power source
- Establish food supply and ability to grow food
- Establish goods manufacturing facility
- Establish reliable and scalable colonial infrastructure
Objective 3
Establish and maintain effective communication channels with exploration vessel and colony
Key Results
- Safeguard and protect communication between space vessels
- Establish ground communication with space vessels
- Maintain and develop communication ability with Earth ground control
- Establish reporting process and secure information capture incase of catastrophe
- Ensure auto data capture and observed data capture and transmission of information to Earth
